It's been 12 years since I came to Japan from the Philippines.
I am currently raising two daughters in Japan.

I still remember how surprised I was by the cleanliness of Japan when I first came here; the streets and towns were kept so well.
Thanks to that environment, I felt that Japan was a very livable and safe country.

And another thing that surprised me was the four seasons of Japan.
This time, I'd like to introduce the charms of autumn, my favorite of Japan's four seasons.

I experienced the concept of "four seasons" for the first time through living in Japan.
In the Philippines, where I was born, the climate remains warm throughout the year, and there are no distinct seasons like in Japan.
Because there aren't dramatic changes from season to season, Japan's four seasons still feel very fresh and unique.

Japanese winters are very cold, and it was especially difficult to get used to at first, but the snowy scenery was very beautiful.
Summers here are very hot and humid, and the heat feels different from that in the Philippines.
Spring and autumn are seasons with mild weather, making them very pleasant to spend time in.

Of all the seasons, autumn is my absolute favorite.
The temperature is just right, neither too hot nor too cold, making it very comfortable.

Autumn in Japan is from September to November.
In Japan, which stretches long from north to south, temperatures vary depending on the region, but the average temperature in October around Kyoto, where I live, is 18.4℃.
On the other hand, the average temperature in October in Okinawa Prefecture, located to the south, is 22.5℃, while the average temperature in October in Hokkaido, located to the north, is 5.2℃.
October in Hokkaido is cold enough to require warm clothing, so you need to consider what to wear depending on the area you're going to.

The autumn weather in my area is very pleasant, making it enjoyable to go outside.
This is the perfect season for walks and drives, and it's also ideal for camping with family or enjoying fishing.

What I find most appealing about autumn in Japan is the beauty of the autumn leaves.

When we think of autumn, the most memorable thing is undoubtedly the changing leaves.
The way the leaves on the trees gradually change color from green to red, orange, and yellow is truly beautiful, and I am moved every time I see it.
Since you can't see scenery like this in the Philippines, I feel it's a special experience unique to Japan.

In particular, there are many famous spots for viewing autumn foliage around Kyoto, where I live, and I visit several of them every year to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
Mountains, temples, nature parks—each has its own unique atmosphere, and wherever you visit, your soul will be soothed.

Every year when autumn foliage season arrives, my family always invites me to go see the leaves.
My daughter really enjoys picking up maple leaves that have turned a beautiful red or yellow as she walks.

I pick up a lot of leaves and bring them into the car, so by the time I get home, there are leaves scattered all over the car.
Even so, when I see the leaves the children have happily collected, I can't help but smile.

My wife also loves autumn leaves, and whenever she finds a beautifully colored maple tree, she stops and takes many pictures with her smartphone or camera.
I enjoy taking photos when I see how the leaves look different in color depending on how the light hits them, or when they look beautiful in combination with the blue sky.

Spending time with family who are having fun is a moment when you can forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relax.

Autumn in Japan is the season for delicious sweet potatoes!

Autumn in Japan is known as the "season of appetite," as it's a time when many delicious ingredients are harvested.

For example, autumn is the harvest season for a type of potato called sweet potato.
Sweet potatoes become very sweet and delicious when roasted.

It all started when I saw roasted sweet potatoes lined up in a Japanese supermarket and thought, "They look delicious," so I bought one to try.
We don't have sweet potatoes this sweet in the Philippines, so I was very surprised when I tasted them for the first time.

I taught my wife about it, and now she loves roasted sweet potatoes even more than I do.
I especially remember eating roasted sweet potatoes all the time when my second daughter was still in my womb.

Besides sweet potatoes, many other delicious ingredients such as Pacific saury, salmon, mushrooms, chestnuts, and persimmons are in season in autumn throughout Japan, so please enjoy a variety of foods.

Autumn in Japan is an appealing season, with its pleasant climate that is neither too hot nor too cold, and the beautiful colors of the autumn leaves.
Being able to experience the changing seasons, something that doesn't exist in the Philippines, is one of the great things I've discovered while living in Japan.

Autumn foliage, in particular, evokes a sense of Japanese autumn and makes time spent with family even more special.
Also, the roasted sweet potato I ate for the first time in Japan became one of the joys that made me feel like autumn was here in Japan.

I will continue to cherish my life in Japan and appreciate the beauty of Japan's four seasons.
And I want to convey the wonderful aspects of Japan and the beauty of the seasons not only to other foreigners who are working hard in Japan just like me, but also to everyone in the Philippines.
